ONW Girls Swim & Dive
On April 17th, the Girls Swim & Dive Team competed at the Shawnee Mission Northwest Pool for a triangular meet with Shawnee Mission North and Shawnee Mission Northwest. The Ravens were very successful, winning numerous events. The team of Maicy Standen, Jaidyn Phillips, Abigail Shanklin and Annamarie Struck placed second in the 200 Yard Medley Relay. In the 200 Yard IM, Jaiden Branstrom placed first and Abigail Shanklin placed second. Lauren Pugh took first place in the 50 Yard Freestyle and 100 Yard Backstroke. For diving, Emily Copeland placed second and Maddie Fentiman placed third in the One Meter. In the 100 Yard Butterfly, Jaiden Branstrom placed first, Abigail Shanklin placed second and Sam Zech placed third. Olathe Northwest finished with a team ranking of 122 after twelve events.
ONW Softball vs. Lawrence Free State
The Varsity Raven Softball team started off their season on March 27, 2018. They played Lawrence Free State on the rainy fields of CBAC. Unfortunately the ladies lost to the Firebirds 8-1 to complete their first game. I covered the game and put together some highlights.
ONW Dance Team Nationals 2018
In early March, the Raven Dance Team travelled to Orlando, Florida to compete in the National Dance Alliance Nationals Competition. They placed third in pom and first in both jazz and team performance. They also won Grand Champions of the entire competition. This is the second year in a row that the Raven Dance Team triple-titled, adding three more banners to the East Gym. I put together a recap with pictures and a few videos of their trip.
NDA Nationals Send-Off 2018
Every year, Olathe Northwest hosts a send-off for the local Kansas teams competing in the NDA Nationals Competition in Orlando, Florida. The schools that participated this year are Olathe Northwest, Blue Valley Northwest, Shawnee Mission East, Mill Valley, Blue Valley West, Gardner Edgerton and Blue Valley Southwest.
ONW Large Varsity Pom
The Raven Dance Team competed one of their dances at the National Dance Alliance Nationals in the category of Pom. The routine incorporated a jungle themed costume, props, poms as well as music choice . They took home third place in the category. The Raven Dance Team competed one of their dances at the National Dance Alliance Nationals in the category of Jazz. The routine is more contemporary, versus the popular high energy jazz. The Raven Dance Team competed one of their dances at the National Dance Alliance Nationals in the category of Team Performance. The routine combines and incorporates three styles of dance: jazz, pom and hip hop. They took home first place in the category. This was filmed at the annual NDA Nationals Send-Off on February 26, 2018.
ONW Volleyball vs BVW
On August 27th, 2016 the Lady Ravens Volleyball Team played Blue Valley West at the annual Time Warner Cable Volleyball Slam held at St. James Academy. I filmed the big turnout as the Ravens took on a tough battle through three sets. After splitting the first two games 1:1, Blue Valley West went on to defeat the Ravens 2:1 in a heart-breaking loss. The Ravens continue to compete with the best high school teams in the metro area each year.
ONW Gymnastics Season Recap 2017
The Ravens Gymnastics Team had a great fall season. Sydney Weeks, Brooke Illum and Hallie Robertson led the team throughout all of their meets. The ladies also earned the title of 2017 State Champions as well as breaking multiple previous school records. I put together a recap of their shining moments with interviews of all three girls and their coach.
Ryan Atchison Feature Story
I decided to do a feature story on Ryan Atchison, a senior band member at Olathe Northwest. This video highlights Ryan's unique opportunity of performing a solo in the band's field show as well as his story of how he became involved in band.
Raven Bowling on January 16, 2018
I filmed the Olathe Northwest Bowling Team at their first meet of 2018 at Mission Bowl on January 16. This is a quick recap including highlights from the meet. Jared Coker and Meleah Smotherman won on varsity, sweeping the competition.
May Day Fun Fest
For one of my final projects of the semester, I covered an event that raises money for Noah's Bandaid Project. The May Day Fun Fest is an event in our community that involves collecting colorful and fun bandaids that will be donated to local children's hospitals. There were lots of fun activities for kids and adults including bounce houses, food trucks, vendors, and the Olathe Fire and Police Department. This video shows highlights of the event with a personal standup and an interview with Noah's dad.
Louder Than A Bomb
Louder Than A Bomb is a poetry slam group here at Olathe Northwest. They compete at local competitions as well as poetry slam nights which are open to everyone at school. I filmed a video, highlighting the members of the group and a few examples of their performances.
ONW Winter Sports Media Day
This year we held our very first media day for all of the winter sports here at Olathe Northwest. During this time, we invited a few members from each team to represent their team on camera as well as their coach and answer a series of questions. We had reporters in our class also ask questions from the audience to imitate a real media day. I worked the tricaster and switcher behind the scenes to put up lower thirds and switch between the players and the audience.
ONW Basketball vs. Topeka West
On Friday January 29, Olathe Northwest Men's Varsity Basketball played Topeka West. I directed the entire broadcast, controlling all aspects of the production. All of the jobs I directed included the tricaster and switcher, commentators, camera angles, and sideline reporters.
Raven Dance Team Nationals 2017
Every year the Olathe Northwest Varsity Dance Team travels to Orlando, Florida to compete at the annual National Dance Alliance (NDA) Nationals. Since we do not have the funding to send students to Florida to film, I put together a recap including pictures and videos of their performances. RDT proudly brought home three more National Titles to add to their previous collection for a grand total of eight. Congratulations ladies on your accomplishments and good luck this year!
Toys for Tots Promotion
Toys for Tots is a drive to collect toy donations for children. They accept new, unwrapped toys as well as cash to distribute to kids in need during the Christmas season. Olathe Northwest was a collection site for students to drop off toys in bins located throughout the school. I put together a reel of pictures from signs posted around the school to promote the drive.
GameDay Northwest for October 5, 2016
In our school news production, ONW...Now!, we have a section that is designated to sports called GameDay Northwest. I anchored this week's segment with fellow classmate Nick Lopez. The sports we highlighted that week included football, volleyball, and soccer. The sports section is included in between the school news segments to complete the show.
